Course Overview
This incredibly fun, exciting and practical photography project workshop is designed for those wishing to learn how to freeze the high-speed motion of moving water with flash. You will learn how to capture splash photography images that are not visible to the human eye and gain an understanding into the power of how off-camera flash can be used to freeze even the fastest motion.
This one-day workshop will open your eyes to the creative possibilities of high speed flash and provide you with the opportunity to take some amazing images.
During the day you will capture many stunning photographs of water drop collisions, paint drops, bursting water balloons and other unique splash photographs.
This workshop is run at our Bristol Harbourside studio. We’ll give you plenty of time to gain hands on experience with different splash setups and the opportunity to capture many unique and inspiring images.

We start the day at our Bristol Harbourside studio located in the historic Underfall Yard. Here we’ll introduce you to the basic concepts of flash photography and introduce the initial camera settings and equipment needed to get you started.
We will have various subjects set up for you to try out different techniques and shots throughout the day.
We will allow time to stop for a lunch break where we can review and discuss any images taken during the morning.
We will continue varying the setups throughout the afternoon finishing with the extremely fun water balloon splash shots.
By the end of the day you will feel confident in capturing high speed flash photography images and will have added some unique and stunning images to your photographic portfolio.
Due to the nature of this subject, timing is everything. As the splash action often happens faster than we can see it with our eyes it does usually require a number of attempts and some persistence in order to capture the perfect image. As such it is advisable to bring plenty of spare batteries and memory cards as this type of photography can become addictive and it is easy to take hundreds of pictures.
No previous experience is necessary, and this unique photographic project workshop is open to anyone regardless of ability. We will help guide you through the each of the set ups and advise on any specific camera settings required.
DSLR, mirrorless, compact or bridge cameras are suitable providing they allow full manual control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and have a flash hot shoe mount.
A tripod and cable release are advisable in order to get the most out of the day but not essential. (We have a couple of spares available).
Spare batteries and memory cards are essential as you will undoubtedly take many hundreds of images throughout the day.
We have flash units and wireless triggers available for you to use but bring your own along if you want to try them out.
